Start with the immediate situation
First check whether you are locked out and whether someone you trust has a spare key. If the keys may have been stolen, or were with something that identifies your home, mention it when you call. That information can affect how urgent the situation feels.
If you can safely wait, retrace your recent steps and contact the places you visited. Avoid trying to force a door or window. If you cannot get in or secure the door, call to discuss the situation with a locksmith.
Should you change the lock after losing keys?
It depends on the circumstances. Think about where the keys went missing and whether anything with your address was on the same ring. Also consider which doors they could open. A key lost without identifying details raises a different question. So does a key taken with a bag or documents that point to your home.
A missing key does not by itself show that the whole lock needs replacing. Rapid Locksmith Liverpool lists lock replacement and rekeying among its services. Whether either option suits your lock depends on the hardware and its condition. Read the guide to replacement versus rekeying for the difference.
If you rent or share an entrance
Tell your landlord, letting agent or building manager before arranging a change, especially if the missing key opens a shared entrance. They can explain who manages that lock and what access arrangements need to be considered. The landlord and property-manager guide covers who to contact and what to clarify.
What to tell the locksmith
Explain whether you are locked out and what happened to the keys. Say what doors they may open and what type of door or lock you have. If you have another working key and only need a copy, ask about the key-cutting service for your key type before making arrangements.
If the lock itself has become stiff or unreliable, see the page about general lock repair. For an immediate lockout, call the emergency locksmith page.
A photo can help identify visible hardware, but avoid sending an image that clearly shows the key cuts. A broad description is a good first step.
